As the title of this blog post would suggest, you are unlikely to find a single household item that weighs exactly 5 kg. There are many household items that weigh around 5 kg though. Most shoppers can establish how much a household item approximately weighs, before making a purchase.
That can be done by either checking how much the producers of the household item claim it weighs (on the packaging) or you could actually weigh the household item on a shop scale before making a purchase. The latter can only really be determined with a walk-in purchase, as opposed to online.
Most Lists Of Household Items That Weigh Around 5 kilograms include: appliances; furniture; pet-related products and food.
Those are the items you will normally find on these lists but items that weigh around 5 kg can also include: bathroom products, decor, sports equipment, accessories and general supplies. While we will discuss these products in greater detail later, here is a list of household items that made our cut:
- Cast Iron Dutch Oven
- Steam Cleaning System
- Air Fryer
- Portable Slow Cooker
- Wooden Ironing Board
- Foldable Dryer
- Trash Can
- Night Stand
- Male Cat
- Pet Vacuum
The weight of a household item is a major determining factor when making a purchase. It often determines whether you will make a walk-in purchase at the local store or have the product shipped in after making an online purchase.
All credible online stores, like Amazon, Walmart and eBay, will include details on product weight because that can have a significant impact on the price that you end up paying for the purchase.
It can also help you determine whether the risk of shipping is worth it because considerable damage can be incurred while your household item is in transit. Most household items that weigh around 5 kg can be safely shipped to your doorstep.
Appliances and Kitchen Products
1. Cast Iron Dutch Oven
The Cast Iron Dutch Oven has become an increasingly popular cooking item in the household, primarily because the food produced by it is of the highest quality. Cast Iron Dutch Oven design dates back more than three centuries, so the pot itself generally weighs a lot more than your conventional pot or pan. The Cast Iron Dutch Oven ticks almost all the cooking boxes but the weight can be an off-putting detail. Most of them will weigh a little more than 5 kg.
2. Steam Cleaning Systems
As the world becomes more obsessed with hygiene, especially during these Covid-19 times, Steam Cleaning Systems will become an increasingly important item in the modern household. Most of these systems will weigh just above 5 kg, which is a vast improvement on previous products that operated much less efficiently than this. This weight excludes tank capacity though.
3. Air Fryer
In keeping with the modern household appliance theme, we now move onto the Air Fryer, which is typically made from some plastic and stainless steel. The stainless steel is where most of the weight will come from. They typically weigh almost exactly 5 kg. In the context of this specific Air Fryer, we are talking about the unit weight only.
4. Portable Slow Cooker
The immediate competition to the Cast Iron Dutch Oven is the standard Portable Slow Cooker. It is more commonly known as a Crock-Pot. Most of its weight comes from the stainless steel casing. If weight determines which one of the two products you purchase, it could be a tricky decision to make. However, on the evidence we have the Crock-Pot wins the battle, as it generally weighs a little less. In fact, it is almost exactly 5 kg.
5. Wooden Ironing Board
The Wooden Ironing Board is still a fashionable item to have in the modern household, despite all of the competition provided by the modern premium steel options on the market. Many of those premium steel options weigh considerably more than 5 kg and can be inconvenient to haul around the household. However, the wooden options available on the market weigh in at just over 4 kg and remain a more suitable option for those who do the ironing in the household. They also generally cost a lot less than many of the steel options.
6. Foldable Dryer
The Foldable Dryer has become an increasingly important feature in modern households, primarily because homes with traditional gardens or even garden space are no longer the vogue. Most of these foldable items are made from an aluminium structure and weigh almost 5 kg on the dot. The key detail here is that the line folds away neatly for storage too.
7. Trash Can
The Trash Can is undoubtedly an essential item for the traditional or modern household. Those of the stainless steel variety generally weigh in at more than 5 kg. They seldom weigh much more than that. Nor do they often weigh considerably less than that. There is one caveat, of course…when the trash can is filled it can take up to 13 gallons.
8. Night Stand
Every bedroom worth its salt will have a Night Stand inside it. This household item would ordinarily come in sets of two and the individual items weigh in at about 5 kg, almost exactly actually. Large night stands don’t always fit in so well anyway.
9. Male Cat
Medical experts will tell you that the average weight for a healthy Male Cat is about 4.5 kg and that falls well within our bracket of around 5 kg. We guess the jury is out on whether a cat is an item or not. There is a strong case to be made that it is, given that it generally just takes up household space and occasionally cleans itself with its tongue. At the end of the day, a cat is something that you would ordinarily purchase.
10. Pet Vacuum
The average healthy male cat acts as a segway for our final household item on the list, which is the Pet Vacuum, which probably has better credentials for a blog post like this. It is a stationary vacuum that collects pet hair, dust and general household debris. The item we found weighs in at a cool 6kg. However, you can purchase items that weigh a little less than this if you search long and hard enough – not necessarily online.
