They are numerous but not everyone cares enough to find them out. Again we are here to help you with this tidbit of information.

One common thing that we hear almost every day is “paperweight”. Just how much does a sheet of paper really weigh, do we know or is it just a figure of expression? Find out about it and some other interesting bits of information here today.

In the scheme of things, 5 grams is not heavy, neither is it light. It is somewhere between those two, not as light as a feather but light enough to be blown away by a relatively strong breeze. Here are examples of some things that weigh no more or approximately 5 grams.

1. Nickel

nickels

Nickel is a five-cent coin produced by the United States mint. Nickel has been issued since 1866 and it is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel.

This coin is unique as it is the only U.S coin that is called by its metal content, even though nickel is only 25% of its composition. All U.S nickels are exactly 5 grams.

2. 5 paper clips

The paper clip is one of the most essential and most-used office equipment in the world today. These small pieces of metal have two identical loops on either side that keeps the papers and other documents in order.

A single paper clip weighs around 0.035274 ounces which is essentially 1 gram. A jumbo paperclip on the other hand weighs 0.0529109 (about 1.5 grams).

I’m sure you have heard the term “paperweight” before. The term is often used to describe something extremely light. But just how much does a paper weigh in the grand scale of things?

Don’t worry, we have found out for you. An A4 paper sheet made from 80 grammages weighs 5 grams. Grammage refers to the size and thickness of the paper. The weight of a paper depends on the grammage.

5. United States Quarter dollar coin

Another coin is making the list. All U.S quarters minted since 1965 weigh within the 5 gram to 5.6 grams bracket. Ideally, you can say 5 grams is about nine-tenths of a U.S quarter.

This is the size of the beautiful American quarter series which began circulation in 2017. The United States quarter is composed of 91% copper on the inside and plated with 8% nickel plating on the outside.

6. 2 United States penny

The United States penny or the one-cent coin weighs differently depending on the year the penny was minted. Pennies were originally made of copper and this was later switched to zinc in 1982. So how much does a penny really weigh?

A copper penny weighs about 3.11 grams and is made up of 95% copper and 5% zinc. The zinc penny on the other hand which is the one currently in circulation weighs about 2.5 grams and is made up of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper.

7. 3 playing cards

3 playing cards

A playing card weighs at least 1.8 grams, three playing cards, therefore, are just a little above the 5.0 grams limit but not above the 5-gram bracket. In other words, 5 grams is about 2.8 times the weight of a playing card.

8. Five Pen Caps

Five Pen Caps

Pens are distinctively made and a lot of times have caps to prevent ink drying. Interestingly, a pen cap weighs 1 gram. Hence, stacking five of these together accounts for a weight of 5 grams.

This list is by no means conclusive, if you know any other object that weighs 5 grams, you can share them with us using the comment section. We hope you have been able to learn something new, ciao.
