How Much Does a Tesla Battery Weigh?

Tesla has made a reputation for itself in the auto industry despite only being in the market for a few years. They’ve revolutionized the auto industry by producing electric and environmentally-friendly vehicles.

Tesla automobiles are the most efficient since they drastically reduce the weight of their vehicles.

The steady climb in Tesla stock price in recent years has convinced (most) skeptics that the business finally has its act together.

The company’s success is due to the advancements it has brought to the automobile industry. Their engineers have been able to fit the big lithium-ion batteries into the body of automobiles. This is difficult because Tesla’s lightest battery weighs almost 1,000 pounds!

Tesla Models and Their Battery Sizes

tesla 1

All Tesla cars use different battery sizes, and the kWh of these batteries differ. The best way to examine the weight of Tesla batteries is to check out the different models and the weight of their batteries.

And that’s exactly what we are going to do now, so, let’s get right to it!

Model S

Battery Size (capacity)Weight
60 kWh848 lbs / 385 kg
70 kWh1000 lbs / 453kg
75 kWh1168 lbs / 530kg
85 kWh1200 lbs / 544 kg
90 kWh1250 lbs / 567 kg
100 kWh1377 lbs / 625 kg

I am confident that Tesla would not be where it is today if not for the Model S. In every aspect, shape, and form, its flagship sedan was a game-changer. Even though the Model 3 has surpassed the Model S in sales, it remains Tesla’s best-selling vehicle.

The 85 kWh battery pack in the Model S weighs 1,200 pounds and has 7,104 lithium-ion battery cells. These cells are housed in 16 modules, two of which are stacked in front and 14 flat beneath the floor. This suggests that it will most likely be around for a long time.

The Model S is built at Elon Musk’s Tesla plant in Fremont, California, which spans over 5 million square feet. Tesla workers disassemble the battery pack, parts, and electric motor for cars sold in Europe and ship them to Tilburg, Netherlands.

The cars are disassembled and reconstructed according to European specifications before being sold. In 2018, the firm reached an agreement with the Chinese government to begin construction on a plant that will be able to produce up to 500,000 automobiles per year.

Model X

Battery Size (capacity)Weight
60 kWh848 lbs / 385 kg
75 kWh1168 lbs / 530kg
90 kWh1250 lbs / 567 kg
100 kWh1377 lbs / 625 kg

When it comes to the Model X, the weight of the battery will vary depending on the year and version of the vehicle.

Since it first appeared on the market in 2015, Tesla has produced several different Model X variants. Since then, Tesla has made four alternative lithium-ion battery packs available for the Model X to choose from.

These batteries have been rated at 60, 75, 90, and most recently 100 kWh for the Model X P100D, the vehicle’s highest-performance version.

When it comes to weight, the three lightest packs are pretty comparable to those found in the Model S, but the P100D packs add approximately 500 pounds to the final product’s overall weight when assembled. As a result, the batteries for the Model X P100D weigh more than 1300 pounds.

It was exciting to learn that the Model X is a fantastic towing vehicle. Thanks to its superior performance, the Tesla Model X set the Guinness World Record for “heaviest tow by an electric production passenger vehicle” in 2019.

Tesla’s first SUV was capable of towing a 150-ton Boeing 787 for nearly 1,000 feet.

Model 3

Battery Size (capacity)Weight
54 kWh715 lbs / 324 kg
62 kWh848 lbs / 385 kg
75 kWh1168 lbs / 530kg
82 kWh1200 lbs / 544 kg

The battery in Tesla’s more inexpensive vehicle is the lightest of the company’s models. Battery experts have dubbed the battery system, with 1054 pounds, “the most advanced big scale lithium battery ever manufactured in [the] world and is YEARS ahead of anything now in production.”

Model 3 batteries have been rated at 54, 62, 75, and 82 kWh.

Tesla divided the Model 3’s battery into four components. Four thousand four hundred sixteen lithium-ion cylinder cells are distributed in a rectangular pattern down the floor in these modules.

The battery system’s designers staggered the battery packs such that there were two larger packs on the inside and two more miniature packs on the outside.

The Model 3 is made in the same plant as its older brother, the Model S, in Fremont, California. Tesla’s “Gigafactory 1” opened in Storey County, Nevada, in 2016.

Later that year, the business launched large-scale manufacture of battery cells for the company’s automobile line at this plant, and mass production of Powerwalls and Powerpacks began in early 2017.

Tesla has established a “Gigafactory 2” in Buffalo, NY, and aims to construct a “Gigafactory Europe” near Berlin, Germany.

Model Y

Battery Size (capacity)Weight
75 kWh1168 lbs / 530 kg

A 75 kWh battery is included with the Tesla Model Y. Other alternatives are available. However, the Model Y comes equipped with a mid-sized battery comparable to the Model 3’s high-end battery.

The standard Model Y with 75 kWh of capacity has a range of roughly 280 miles, implying a 0.26 kWh per mile use.

The Model Y batteries are built to last. For 8 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first, their battery warranty covers degeneration beyond 70%.

As a result, the 75 kWh battery in the Model Y weighs 1168 lbs. The Model Y also features a heat pump and a complex heating system to keep the cabin and batteries warm while maintaining range.

Roadster

Battery Size (capacity)Weight
200 kWh1836 lbs / 833 kg

The smallest Tesla also happens to be the highest and heaviest battery capacity. Yes, you did read that correctly. Considering that these bad boys contain 200 kWh batteries, it isn’t farfetched to think they are capable of such feats.

The Roadster’s battery pack will have TWICE the capacity of the P100D variants of the Model S and Model X electric vehicles. What exactly does this imply? For starters, it means that the Roadster will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in an incredible 1.9 seconds.

It will also enable the car to reach top speeds of up to 250 miles per hour. The roadster’s batteries weigh 1836 pounds due to the composition we’ve explained above.

How Does Tesla Battery ‘kWh to Weight Ratio’ Compare to Other Electric Cars?

tesla2

Amongst Electric cars in production, the Tesla has the best kWh to weight ratio. Even with the highest kWh batteries, Tesla weighs less than other cars.

The Tesla Model S and 3, with 82kWh to 100 kWh and more than 2200 kg, have a 22.4 – 26.3 kWh to weight ratio.

Only the Jaguar I-Pace, Volkswagen ID, and Ford Mustang make the top list of cars with a great kWh to weight ratio.
